JRS Afghanistan, conceived the “Skilling Circles” for the benefit of the heritage artisans from among the many multi-ethnic tribes of Afghanistan. This cultural country holds a treasure trove of an eclectic mix of heritage art that seems to be inspired from the very landscape that surrounds them.

The landlocked country of Afghanistan is home to women artisans whose exquisite ethnic designs differ extensively by province and the folkloric group they belong to. This handmade craft has been lovingly transferred from mother to daughter for their own domestic use. Look closely at an artisan’s creation and it will tell a story of a culture driven community and it’s traditions.

Carpet Weaving
Despite weaving for years, its the Skilling Circles that taught me to draft weaving patterns, a skill that always made me dependent on other. I hope one day I will be an Afghan business woman

Another ethnic skill that has been painstakingly transferred down from one generation to the next is carpet weaving. The women weavers weave carpets by hand for their family’s use. While it’s the men who shear the sheep, it’s the women who collect the herbs to make dyes, spin, dye yarn and weave in their spare time.

The Skilling Circles of Afghanistan
Restarted in 2023, JRS has virtually partnered with a professional designer with an aim to develop a craft collection for a global (casual & festive) home décor market.
Under a threefold program, this JRS-designer-artisan collaboration, Identified artisans with art that had the potential to scale and began Upskilling them to transition from artisan to Empowered entrepreneurs. That meant drawing them out of their homes and into a professionally equipped community center, albeit, within the safe confines of their village. Irrespective of the continent it works in, JRS always ensures it's beneficiaries are paid a fair wage for their heritage art.
Through all the challenges of climate changes, financial aid, designer tech packs and a sacrosanct design process, JRS, the designer, and the ethnic entrepreneurs continue to work tirelessly towards a soft launch, scheduled for early Autumn 2024.
